What is the SQE?
A new route to qualification as a lawyer, the SQE is the Solicitors Qualifying Examination, which can be studied for with any undergraduate degree.
It is a two-part course, made up of the SQE 1 and the SQE 2. Once you have completed the exams and 2 years qualifying work experience, you will be admitted as an England and Wales Solicitor.
How is the SQE structured?
- SQE 1 is a closed book assessment made up of 360 multiple choice questions. There are two assessments, with 180 questions each.
- SQE 2 is a two part exam, made up of 4 oral assessments and a total of 12 written assessments.
You will need to pass the SQE 1, before starting the SQE 2.
Who can study for the SQE?
You can study for the SQE with any undergraduate degree, you do not need a law degree.
If you have completed the LPC, you can claim an exemption for SQE 1.
What is qualifying work experience?
Qualifying work experience is the work you carry out while training (usually whilst studying for the SQE). Your work experience will need to be signed off by a qualified England and Wales Solicitor.
