Carey Olsen leads offshore firms in Chambers High Net Worth 2020
Carey Olsen has been praised for its 'technical excellence' in the 2020 edition of the Chambers and Partners High Net Worth (HNW) guide and continues to be ranked in more jurisdictions than any other offshore law firm.
In total, 10 of the firm's lawyers from across its Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Guernsey and Jersey offices have been recognised by the independent legal directory, including Keith Robinson (Bermuda) and Russell Clark (Guernsey) who once again achieved individual Band 1 rankings. In addition, Carey Olsen remains the only Band 1 ranked law firm in Guernsey.
Carey Olsen Bermuda partner Keith Robinson, who is head of the firm's trusts and private wealth practice, is the only lawyer in Bermuda to be ranked in Band 1. He is acknowledged by sources as a 'first-rate lawyer' and 'a long-term strategic partner on significant contentious matters'. Another market insider praised his technical skills and as someone who automatically knows the references and the answers'.
Russell Clark, managing partner and head of the trusts and private wealth group in Guernsey, also continues as a Band 1 ranked lawyer and is described as 'one of the most well-known names in Guernsey'. Interviewees also highlight his 'high level of expertise' and how he is 'very technical and very intelligent'.
In retaining its status as the only Band 1 firm in Guernsey, industry sources describe Carey Olsen as 'definitely the number one firm in Guernsey' and as a 'big firm that can deal with pretty much anything we ask them to'. Another market source said the firm 'conduct themselves well to make clients feel happy'.
The firm's Jersey office (Band 2) is praised as 'one of the top service providers on the island; they are excellent'. Another interviewee observed how 'they have good people and can handle the big-ticket work for major clients'.
Carey Olsen Bermuda's trusts and private wealth practice (Band 2) has 'made quite the leap into the jurisdiction and have made real inroads into the private client area', according to one market insider, while other sources note how the practice 'has grown remarkably', 'works very well together' and is 'a leading firm'.
The firm's Cayman Islands (Band 3) trusts and private wealth team is considered by sources as the 'first choice for Cayman matters' and 'a natural fit for HNW clients'. It is also noted how the team has a 'great combination of technical excellence along with emotional intelligence and commercial pragmatism'.
Ashley Fife, counsel in the Bermuda trusts and private wealth team, has moved up to Band 2 in the rankings and is described as 'a real-up-and-comer' and someone 'making a name for himself'. Another source said: 'We are very reliant on him, his manner with staff is exemplary and he is a very talented lawyer'.
In the Cayman Islands, Bernadette Carey, partner and head of the trusts and private wealth practice, has also moved up in the rankings (Band 3) and is praised by sources as 'a fantastic advocate for the profession and the Cayman jurisdiction as a whole' and as someone who 'knows how to achieve client goals in the most efficient way possible'. Counsel Graham Stoute is also ranked in Band 3 and regarded as 'a very strong and capable lawyer' and someone who 'provides very high-level advisory work'.
Guernsey partner Konrad Friedlaender (Band 2) is praised for his 'superb turnaround time and responsiveness' and acclaimed as 'a top lawyer'. Fellow Guernsey partner Natasha Kapp is ranked for the first time (Band 3) and is praised for her advice on 'matters which straddle contentious and non-contentious issues'. Another source notes how she 'handles very substantial family trusts and is very good'. Counsel Patricia Montgomery has moved up to Band 3 in the Guernsey rankings and is 'a very well-liked lawyer who just gets on with everyone and has great technical skills'.
Jersey's head of the trust and private wealth practice, Siobhan Riley, is ranked in Band 2, while fellow Jersey partner Alexa Saunders has moved up in the rankings to Band 3. Siobhan is commended for her 'very good understanding of the family office environment' and as someone who 'offers very good, practical and commercial solutions'. Alexa is praised for 'always delivering her advice when she says', while another source says 'she is wonderful' and 'does a good job'.
