Carey Olsen strengthens BVI dispute resolution and litigation practice with lateral partner and counsel hires
Carey Olsen has brought litigation and insolvency specialist Tim Wright back in as a partner of its British Virgin Islands (BVI) dispute resolution and litigation practice.
Tim's return as partner coincides with the appointment of experienced BVI litigator, Simon Hall, as counsel within the team.
The appointments, which follow the lateral hire in September of Alex Hall Taylor KC as head of the BVI dispute resolution and litigation team, are part of Carey Olsen's ongoing strategy to build out the firm's BVI dispute resolution and litigation offering both in the jurisdiction and further afield.
Tim, who joins from heading the BVI litigation practice of Bedell Cristin, previously worked for Carey Olsen in the jurisdiction between 2016 and 2019.
Drawing on his broad onshore and offshore experience, Tim's practice covers a wide range of litigation and insolvency matters with much of his recent work in the BVI focusing on cross-border fraud and asset tracing and all forms of corporate insolvency work, including liquidation. He is experienced at acting for and against liquidators in substantial insolvency proceedings as well as advising on shareholder disputes and unfair prejudice petitions, trust disputes and fraud work, and complex multi-jurisdictional cases.
Commenting on his appointment, Tim Wright said: "I am thrilled to be returning to Carey Olsen as a partner. The firm is growing at a rate of knots, drawing on its exceptional reputation and calibre globally for dispute resolution, litigation and insolvency work. It's exciting to be a part of this and I very much look forward to developing the firm's BVI litigation practice with Alex, who is a first class hire for the firm as head of BVI litigation. We are building a strong and talented team from the off, and will hit the ground running."
Simon, who joins Carey Olsen after more than five years at the Maples Group in BVI, specialises in shareholder and director disputes, fraud and asset tracing, contentious trust and probate, and insolvency work.
He acts for a wide range of clients including large financial institutions, high net worth individuals, insolvency practitioners and professional trustees. As well as his significant BVI trial and appellate experience, Simon has conducted an array of interlocutory work including applications for freezing orders, prohibitory injunctions and the appointment of receivers.
Alex Hall Taylor KC said: "I am delighted that Tim is returning to Carey Olsen and joining me as a partner in our BVI team. He enjoys a great reputation in the offshore legal sector and his extensive experience in complex cross-border disputes involving the BVI makes him another valuable addition not only to our team but also the firm's global dispute resolution and litigation offering.
"Simon's arrival is further good news for the BVI team, the firm and our clients. His clear commitment to the jurisdiction has given him invaluable experience of BVI commercial court practice and international litigation. We are pleased to promote him to counsel as he joins, recognising his quality and potential.
"We continue to see strong appetite for our dispute resolution, litigation and insolvency services and appointing highly specialised lawyers who share a wealth of experience is key to our ongoing strategy to invest in and grow our offering to meet the needs of clients."
Carey Olsen has more than 25 BVI-qualified lawyers working across its international network of offices, providing advice to clients in Asia, Europe, North America and the Caribbean in their own time zone.
