Carey Olsen tops offshore rankings in Chambers High Net Worth 2021

The firm continues to be ranked in more jurisdictions than any other offshore legal provider and is now ranked in Band 1 for its trusts and private wealth practices in Bermuda, Guernsey and Jersey, while its Cayman Islands office has moved up to Band 2.

Carey Olsen also has 13 lawyers individually recognised, which is more than any other offshore competitor. Among those individually recognised, Russell Clark (Guernsey) and Keith Robinson (Bermuda) have maintained their Band 1 rankings.

Carey Olsen's Guernsey office has retained its Band 1 ranking and is described by industry commentators as 'exceptional' and a 'fantastic team', while another highlights how 'you do not need to cherry-pick certain lawyers. Anybody you get there is very good'.

The Jersey office, which has moved up to Band 1, is praised for its 'great strength in depth' and partners who 'have a wealth of experience and are very commercially orientated'.

The firm's Cayman Islands trusts and private wealth practice is 'on the ball in terms of their responsiveness, thoroughness, and accurate and qualified advice', according to one interviewee, while another highlights the 'number of skilled practitioners that bolster the team'.

Keith Robinson, partner and head of Carey Olsen Bermuda's trusts and private wealth practice, continues as a Band 1 ranked lawyer. He is hailed as a 'standout practitioner in the offshore trusts market', with another market commentator highlighting the 'lexicon of knowledge in his head that can be applied for all purposes succinctly, accurately and timely'.

Ashley Fife, counsel in the Bermuda trusts and private wealth team, has maintained his Band 2 ranking with sources praising his 'sharp mind', 'ability to communicate' and the fact he is 'always up to date with changing legislation'.

Russell Clark, managing partner and head of the trusts and private wealth group in Guernsey, retains his Band 1 ranking and is acknowledged as 'an absolute star, both in terms of his technical ability and client-handling skills'. Other industry sources describe him as 'a leading light in Guernsey' and 'extremely clever and analytical'.

Guernsey partner Konrad Friedlaender (Band 2) is a 'pleasure to work with' and a provider of 'Rolls-Royce advice', while fellow Guernsey partner Natasha Kapp, who is also now ranked in Band 2, is considered to be 'at the top of her game, both on the contentious and non-contentious side'. Interviewees describe counsel Patricia Montgomery (Band 3) as a 'fantastic pair of hands and really easy to work with' and a 'hugely likeable individual'.

In the Cayman Islands, Bernadette Carey, partner and head of the trusts and private wealth practice, has moved up to Band 2 and is considered by one source as 'one of the most emotionally intelligent trust lawyers I have ever met', while another describes her as 'just absolutely brilliant'.

Other members of the Cayman Islands team to be recognised are counsel Graham Stoute and Chris Duncan. Graham has maintained his Band 3 position in the Cayman Islands rankings and is also recognised in the 'Foreign expertise based abroad' section of the British Virgin Islands rankings for the first time. Sources describe him as 'very commercial' and 'very bright', while another highlights that he 'gets called The Professor because he has an incredibly strong grasp of the law'. Chris, who appears in the rankings for the first time as an 'Up and Coming' practitioner, is able to 'navigate through matters seamlessly' and 'builds good relationships with clients'.

Jersey's head of the trust and private wealth practice, Siobhan Riley, is ranked in Band 2 and praised for being 'excellent at solving complex issues' and being able to 'deal with your headstrong, entrepreneurial clients'. Fellow partner Alexa Saunders (Band 2) has improved her ranking and is noted for 'getting to the crux of an issue and picking up the details very quickly' as well as her 'well-considered, straightforward and commercial advice'.

Partners Keith Dixon and Andreas Kistler (both Band 3) have entered the HNW rankings for the first time. Keith is considered a 'real trusts brain' as well as 'technically brilliant but really down to earth', while Andreas, who is already ranked in Band 2 by Chambers for dispute resolution, is described by market commentators as a 'stellar name on the contentious side' and 'a highly competent and effective court advocate'.
